你以为我一直讲的是什么呢？

当我描述某个城市时我所说的就是威尼斯。

大汗说：

你应该如实道来。

记忆中的形像，一但在字词中固定下来，就被抹掉了。也许我害怕，我如果提到的话，就会失去威尼斯。

或许，当我提到其它城市时，

我已经一点一点的失去了它。

Introduction

"You should then begin each tale of your travels from the departure, describing Venice as it is, all of it, not omitting anything you remember o f it. "

"Memory's images, once they are fixed in words, are erased," Polo said. "Perhaps I am afraid of losing Venice all at once, if I speak of it. Or perhaps, speaking of other cities, I have already lost it, little by little."
